Exfoliation involves washing away dead skin cells that have accumulated on the top layer of your skin. After some time, these cells will naturally fall off but by using a scrub or chemical exfoliator that’s suited to your specific skin type, it’ll enhance the appearance of your skin.
In the latest warm, hot weather, especially, our skin tends to leave a layer of dead skin cells on its surface in an effort to protect itself from damaging factors such as the sun, chlorine, wind, etc. The outcome is a dry, colorless complexion.
Exfoliating improves your skins appearance in several ways such as unclogging pores, improving skin texture, visually brighter and plumper skin, and it allows your other skincare products to absorb better.
There are 2 different forms of exfoliation that you can use to get those results:
Physical/ Mechanical Exfoliation –
Dead skin cells are removed with products like a scrub containing grainy substances or with tools that have abrasive surfaces, such as textured gloves. Microdermabrasion is a great physical exfoliation procedure since it gently removes the very top layer of the skin.
Physical exfoliants can be used without risk if you have normal or oily skin. It may be too abrasive for those with dry or sensitive skin.
Chemical Exfoliation –
Products that contain acids or enzymes which help dissolve or loosen dead skin cells. The two types of chemical exfoliation acids are AHA’s and BHA’s.
AHA: Lactic and Glycolic Acids are used to speed cell turnover allowing the skin to shed.
BHA: Oil-soluble acids that penetrate deep into the pores and treat oiliness.
The Pumpkin Enzyme Brightening Peel is a perfect chemical anti-aging and brightening exfoliant masque.

Chemical exfoliants are a better fit if you have sensitive, dry skin, or acne prone skin. To break it down even further:
- AHA solutions are ideal for sensitive, dry, or sun damaged skin since it doesn’t remove the skins natural oils, allowing for your skin to retain its natural moisture.
- BHA solutions are ideal for ace prone or oily skin since it may leave the skin feeling dry while killing the germs, reduces inflammation, and helps prevent breakouts.
